A brief explanation of some commonly used camera terminology.
Shutter Button
Used on a digital camera to activate the shutter, this button is also known as the shutter release button.Telephoto Lens
Among 35mm camera lenses, those with focal lengths of 70mm or longer are called telephoto lenses. Camera lenses with a focal length of over 400mm are called super telephoto lenses.Zoom Camera lens
A zoom Camera lens is one that has a focal length that can be varied, while retaining focus. Early zoom lenses were mainly for longer focal lengths - such as 80-200mm for 35mm cameras - and the term is often wrongly used to simply mean long focal length lenses (even sometimes fixed focal length lenses). Modern zoom lenses covering wide-angle ranges and also going from wide-angle to telephoto are common.Top-Face Controls
A widely used term for the controls located on the top of a digital camera.Unsharp Mask
A popular tool found in Macromedias Fireworks image editing software. It is used to increase contrast at image edges and enhance the visibility of a boundary between light and dark tones which helps improve image clarity in images made by digital cameras.USB
Universal Serial Bus. One standard used for the transfer of digital camera images from peripheral devices to a PC.Viewfinder
Allows the photographer to confirm the image's angle of view, which in turn allows for the accurate taking of photographs. Many cheap digital cameras do not have a Viewfinder and rely on a LCD.Wide-Angle Camera Lens
Describes any Camera lens that provides a wider angle of view than a 'standard' lens.Zoom Flash
A type of digital camera flash that allows the illumination angle to be changed.Zoom Flash
