Digital Camera Memory
Memory is an important part of digital photography and
digital cameras, so the team here at
Cheap Digital camera
UK thought it would be a good idea to give you a short
guide on digital camera memory.
The fact that you are visiting Cheap Digital Camera UK
probably means you already own a digital camera or are
thinking about
buying one, therefore memory cards are something you will
have to learn a little about as they are one of the most
important (but not cheap) accessories you can buy for your
digital camera.
Types of memory cards
There are many types
memory cards available due to the fact that the digital
camera manufactures use different types, many use Secure
Digital media cards, Olympus and FujiFilm use xD and
SmartMedia, Sony has its own type called Memory Stick and
what's left use CompactFlash (CF) Type I or Type II cards but
this type of card is becoming the professionals card as you
will see if you take a look at the majority of digital SLR
cameras. The CF memory cards large physical size is probably
its biggest disadvantage in the digital camera consumer
market where consumer demand is forcing digital camera
manufacturers to cram more and more features in smaller and
cheaper camera bodies.
CompactFlash Cards
Choosing a CF card can take a
little more thought than is needed when choosing a Secure
Digital media type of card. This is due to the fact that with
CF cards comes size, type and speed considerations.
Size and Type
Buy the largest capacity CF memory card within your means
because the larger the capacity the less you have to keep
sliding memory cards in and out of your digital camera. This
may not be the cheap option but it will mean more enjoyment
from your camera in the long run.
Type I CF cards are 3.3mm thick while Type II are 5mm; this
is the only difference between them. (Some digital cameras
will not work with Type II CF cards, so make a point of
knowing what your camera supports.
Speed
Write speed is one of the most misunderstood values in
digital camera photography. The current rating standard for
CF media is the 'X' system, where the manufacturer uses a
number followed by 'x' (times) to indicate the relative speed
of a CF memory product; 10x, 5x, 1x, etc. The X rating is
based on how many times faster a given digital camera CF
memory card can store data as compared to a single speed
CD-ROM (150KB/s). A 10x CF memory card should be able to move
data at a 1.5MB/s peak rate, while a 20x card should be able
to shift 3MB/s.
This speed data is a vital as the faster data can be written
to a memory card, the faster the user can take another
picture, and with improvements in digital camera technology
meaning even cheap digital cameras come with 4 and 5
megapixels of power these days write speed will always be
important.
The team at Cheap Digital Camera UK hope that you enjoyed
